Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:
Apply new concepts of immunizing children in their community

Background:

The Centers For Disease Control recommends communities maintain a 90% immunization rate to protect children from disease. Key barriers preventing children from obtaining immunizations include:
Cost of vaccines
Inaccessibility of clinic locations and hours
Lack of understanding of the importance of vaccines
In 1992, immunizations rates were at the critically low level of 49% in Allen County. Through the collaboration of local hospitals, health officials and community volunteers Super Shot Saturdays began operating free immunization clinics on two designated Saturdays at various sites each year. In March 1999, to address evolving community needs, Super Shot Saturday dropped Saturday from its name and began operating weekly immunization clinics throughout Allen County. Since 1993, Super Shot has provided over 185,000 immunizations to over 65,000 children.

Setting:

Neigborhood immunization clinics

Population:

Each year Super Shot serves over 10,000 children from birth through 18 years.

Project Description:

Using VFC vaccine, Super Shot provides FREE immunizations to all children, particularly minorities, low income and the underserved in Allen County. Clinics operate in donated space five days a week with after-school, weekend and daytime hours to accommodate a variety of family schedules. Super Shot collaborates with local hospitals, school districts, churches, and the Fort Wayne Allen County Health Department.

Results/Lessons Learned:

To raise immunization rates in a community:
Provide free immunizations to all children from birth to 18 years of age
Educate parents on the importance of immunizations and the complex vaccine schedule
Operate clinics at family friendly locations during non-traditional hours
Collaborate with local hospitals, school districts, and the department of health
