What AAP Chapters Can Do

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to
List 3 principles for a successful AAP chapter immunization program.
Describe four activities that could be adopted by an AAP State Immunization Program.
List one activity that they can implement in their State.



Background:

During the last decade Massachusetts achieved the highest rates of infant immunization coverage. The MCAAP-II has been a critical player in this statewide effort.

Massachusetts State


Population:

Massachusetts physicians and health professionals, child health advocates, legislators, schools, and the people they serve.


Project Description:

Our principles -
Reduce vaccine-preventable diseases and achieve high childhood vaccination rates by learning and understanding the needs of communities, supporting local health professionals, building a coalition of providers, and providing education on current and future vaccines, the disease they prevent, and the benefits of immunization.
Develop, promote and maintain working relations other organizations, the media and legislators.
Support and educate providers, outreach personnel, volunteers, and parents groups.
Maintain a statewide advisory committee and standing sub and ad hoc committees.
Activates and Projects:
Education-
Local and regional educational programs at hospitals, clinics and community settings,
Development of information and educational media for physicians and health professionals.
Publication of a newsletter for clinicians, outreach personnel, advocates, educators and the interested public.
Sponsorship of an annual immunization skill building conference
Maintenance of a website
Collaboration with other MCAAP committees.
Advocacy-
Advocacy for vaccine-related initiatives which have succeeded in maintaining Massachusetts not only as a universal distribution state, but also a leader in prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases.
Surveys-
National and state immunization data.
Yearly surveys of reimbursement policies of the health plans
Office Tools-
Development of provider office tools.



Results/Lessons Learned:

Success is due to the close working relationship with a wide coalition of health, legislative and education professionals, and the comprehensive approach taken to minimizing vaccine-preventable disease in the state
