Building and Maintaining Effective Partnerships on Public Health Issues Focus: Immunization

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:
By the end of the presentation participants will be able to identify the roles of state public health programs and partners in the federal legislative process and gain insight into the communications challenges and opportunities facing immunization programs.

Background:
Congressional actions impact immunization programs and federal and state program officials often are called upon to assess program impact for federal lawmakers and their staff. Therefore, it is important for public health professionals to be aware of congressional actions that may impact immunization programs.

Objectives:
Participants will gain insight into the technical role public health professionals can play supporting congressional activities. The session will feature discussions with public health partners about working with congressional staff, health care organizations, and executive branch officials to provide immunization program information and technical assistance.

Methods:
Government Affairs representatives of national organizations focused on public health will discuss 2006 congressional priorities, immunization issues and related strategies for providing federal elected officials and their staff the program information needed.

Results:
Participants will obtain a preview of the public health and immunization-related issues of interest to lawmakers. The relationship between the legislative agenda and the congressional budget and appropriations process will be described.


Conclusions:
Federal legislation impacts immunization programs at the state and local level. A keen understanding of the federal legislative process enhances public health professionals' responses to congressional requests. Additionally, partnerships can be instrumental to assessing the potential impact federal legislation may have on their programs.
