MOBI Travels...Right to Your Office: How to Create a Statewide Provider Immunization Education Program for Health Care Providers and Their Office-based Staff

Kari Veraas, The MOBI Program, 10201 Covan drive, Columbus, OH, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
Identify 2 successful components of a statewide immunization education program.

Background:

Developed in 1996, Ohio's MOBI (Maximizing Office Based Immunization) Program is a statewide provider education quality improvement program for private and public health care providers with an emphasis on office-based practice.

Setting:

The Ohio Chapter - American Academy of Pediatrics, collaborating with the Ohio Department of Health Immunization Program and a network of one hundred local public health immunization nurses, operates Maximizing Office Based Immunization (MOBI), a statewide provider education quality improvement program.

Population:

MOBI, together with AFIX, educates pediatrician and family physician private offices on the strategies to increase on-time immunization of infants and children in their practice.

Project Description:

MOBI incorporates peer to peer education strategies to educate immunization providers statewide. One hundred public health immunization nurses are trained as MOBI Trainers. A curriculum is developed and presented to the target audience of physicians, nurses, medical assistants and office based personnel. A multimedia approach featuring a slide presentation, print and lecture format allows the program to be tailored to numerous audiences. Trainers are presented with a comprehensive trainer's manual with presenter's notes and all course materials, as well as MOBI Resource Packs for audience members. An annual Train- the- Trainer Workshop is provided for trainers, followed by additional workshops and updates throughout the year.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Nearly 1800 programs have been presented since MOBI's start in 1996, with close to 400 programs presented in 2005. The MOBI program has proven to be a successful method for conveying immunization information to immunization providers statewide.
