Learning Objectives for this Presentation:

By the end fo the presentation, participants will be able to understand the procedures for planning a pandemic influenza tabletop exercise for school systems and prioritizing the recommendations that emerge from the exercise.

Background:

In summer 2005, Maryland implemented a recommendation from their 2004 pandemic flu tabletop exercise by conducting an exercise to assess the state school system's preparedness to respond to an influenza pandemic.

Setting:

Tabletop exercise.

Population:

School administrators, public health officials, and state emergency management personnel.

Project Description:

A tabletop exercise was held to simulate the evolution of an influenza pandemic. Questions raised from the exercise scenarios addressed school closures, communication and collaboration with public health agencies, and communication to the community.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Authors are awaiting completion of the After Action Report, due November 15, 2005.
