Teaching Process, Best Practices Produce Measurable Improvement

Debbie McCune - Davis, The Arizona Partnership for Immunization, 320 E. McDowell Road, Suite 320, Phoenix, AZ, USA and Jennifer Tinney, The Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI), 320 E. McDowell Road, Suite 320, Phoenix, AZ, USA.

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:
By the end of the presentation participants will understand the benefits of integrating multiple facets, including use of the registry, into a comprehensive provider education program.

Background:
Immunization registries bring new tools into the effort to improve and sustain immunization coverage levels. The provider community must learn to use the value-added features to improve immunization delivery and health care outcomes. An immunization coalition provides a solid partnership to engage all community sectors in immunization improvement strategies.

Setting:
Community based trainings are offered to private provider offices. The local training classes are offered in rural and urban settings to make attendance convenient for the participants. The classes are conducted during the summer and early fall before RSV season begins and are scheduled mid-week to avoid the Monday and Friday rush that occurs in pediatric and family practice offices.

Population:
The majority of vaccines are administered in the private sector. By improving the skill set of staff members in physician's offices, we reach many children, in culturally appropriate settings within a medical home, with a high quality of immunization services.

Project Description:
A single training curriculum that incorporates best practices from all components of the immunization program increases the likelihood of success. Customer services, vaccine management, assessment, appropriate delivery of immunizations and use of the registry are integrated into a "best practices" education program for providers.

Results/Lessons Learned:
A one year increase of 270% in the number of private practices reaching 90% coverage levels with their two year old population can be achieved through best practices training and CASA assessment as follow up.
