Learning Objectives for this Presentation:
1. By the end of the presentation participants will be able to describe 4 key messages used in a community-based event to promote awareness about the importance of adult immunizations. .
2. By the end of the presentation participants will be able to describe 2 ways to incorporate Baby Boomers in their efforts to promote immunizations among adults.

Background:
In an effort to raise awareness about adult immunizations, especially among Baby Boomers, a ground-breaking partnership consisting of public and private entities was created to organize a unique media event to bring light to this important issue. Through hard work and collaboration, the Boomer Bike Immunization Ride was born.

Setting:
The California Adult Immunization Coalition (CAIC) in partnership with the California Distance Learning Health Network (CDLHN), the Biggs Harley Owners Group ( HOG) Chapter, North San Diego County and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency held the first Boomer Biker Immunization Ride on Saturday, October 14, 2006.

Population:
About 70 HOG riders, many of them Baby Boomers in the 50's, were immunized against influenza following their daily ride in San Marcos, California.

Project Description:
This unique media event targeted adults over 50 because they are at a higher risk for complications connected to influenza. Through this event and the related video news release, we also informed the public about the new tetanus booster, as well as other immunizations adults might need.

Results/Lessons Learned:
By all accounts, the Boomer Biker Immunization Ride was extremely successful. Not only did the ride target an important age group of people who need to be immunized, the visuals fo the event provided a huge draw for the media. In fact, the event was so successful CAIC and CDLHN are planning to hold another Boomer Biker Immunization Ride in a different county next year during National Adult Immunization Awareness Week.
