Community Partnerships Increase Immunization Outreach

Background:
Many children today have no insurance and no medical home. The families of these children face numerous barriers when accessing the healthcare system such as: cost of service, availability of service,time off from work, transportation.Consequently, obtaining immunizations can create a crisis for these families resulting in delinquency. It has been shown that partnerships can increase services in communities. Partnering an immunization provider and an area business can increase mmunization outreach in communities.


Setting:
McDonald's restaurants in various communities with flexible evening hours.

Population:
Children and adolescents, who are underinsured, have no insurance or no medical home.


Project Description:
An immunization provider partners with various McDonald's restaurants who sponsor immunization outreach at their locations on a set schedule and assist with advertisement. The dining area of the restaurant is used to distribute paperwork, screen immunization records, and counsel clients. A mobile unit is parked outside the restaurant for administration of the immunizations. The immunizations are provided at no charge during flexible evening hours to help meet the needs of the community.

Results/Lessons Learned:
Partnering with a local business that assists with advertisement and has flexible hours on a monthly basis can help establish successful immunization outreach in communities.
