VFC Vaccine Accountability through a statewide Registry: South Dakota's Experience

Tammy LeBeau, Immunization Program, South Dakota Department of Health, 615 East 4th Street, Pierre, SD, USA

Learning Objectives for this Presentation:
By the end of the presentation participants will learn how South Dakota's registry, and potentially other state registries, can be used to:
1. Generate vaccine accountability reports and use the data produced.
2. Use the automated vaccine management function to ensure VFC compliance, and use the data to complete the annual provider profile
3. Use the "Give Vaccine" function (automated vaccine management from the time of immunization record entry)
4. Produce the Doses Administered Report and inventory report for monitoring vaccine usage and over-ordering

Background:
One of CDC's immunization program priorities is to enhance and ensure VFC vaccine accountability at the grantee and provider levels. The South Dakota Immunizatin Information System (SDIIS) includes a detailed, accurate vaccine accountability system that all providers in South Dakota utilize to track real-time inventory and each dose of vaccine by child and by VFC eligibility status.

Setting:
All childhood vaccine providers in South Dakota, except for Indian Health Service Facilities.

Population:
The SDIIS is used to enter all childhood immunizations given in South Dakota. We are currently encouraging providers to also enter adolescent and adult immunizations.

Project Description:
Public health professionals will be provided with a brief description of the vaccine accountability reports, an example of each of these reports and how they are used in South Dakota. Participants will be challenged to determine whether the registries in their jurisdictions can be used similarly to enhance their VFC vaccine accountability practices.

Results/Lessons Learned:
The automated vaccine accountability function has proven to be the most accurate method of monitoring vaccine usage and provider profiles. This function has been a valuable tool not only at the local provider level, but also at the state and federal levels. Local providers have become very dependent on this valuable function, as it is an enormous time saver and produces accurate, useful, timely reports.
