Background:
Flu vaccine manufacturing and distribution problems continue to challenge providers across the nation. Each year we face unique challenges, with increasing responsibility to efficiently manage and utilize flu vaccine inventory to immunize communities in a climate of rapid, unanticipated changes.
Setting:
Eagle County, Colorado is a rural, mountain community of nearly 50,000 residents. Much of our population is transient and young, with a median age of 31.2 years, and is 26% Hispanic heritage. Our economy is driven by tourism, being home to several ski resorts and summer activities.
Population:
All persons eligible for flu vaccination over the age of 6 months, and special populations
Project Description:
Over the last three years Eagle County Health & Human Services has used methods and tools to manage flu vaccine inventory to finish each season with 1% unused product, while simultaneously increasing flu vaccinations by 419%.
Results/Lessons Learned:
Weekly flu vaccination data provides the essential information needed for ongoing planning throughout a flu season. Indeed, this information guides the implementation of flu vaccination policy changes and outreach efforts aimed at assuring all vaccine is used to strategically cover a community to the extent possible.
