42nd National Immunization Conference (NIC): Innovative Approaches to Health Communication

Innovative Approaches to Health Communication

Virtual worlds, social networks, blogs, wikis, email, mobile devices, and podcasting are new media formats that have significantly changed our everyday lives and the world we live in. This workshop will discuss new media, whose using it, how they are using it and how it can be used to get your immunization message across. In a review of the 2007-2008 seasonal influenza campaign, hear how new media elements were incorporated into the ongoing campaign and the impact these technologies had on promotion of influenza vaccination uptake. Seasonal influenza new media elements to be discussed include: specialized podcasts, a webinar for mommy blog writers, virtual vaccinations for younger audiences, messaging via social networks and online partner collaborations. Utilizing these channels, information on seasonal influenza vaccinations was reinforced with the traditional target audiences, presented to new audiences, and provided in a format that encouraged interactive learning and personal engagement. Evaluation metrics and recommendations for future new media applications will be discussed.
