Biographical Sketch:
2008-present -- Board Chair, Karen (Organization of Minnesota (KOM), St Paul, MN 2006-present --Refugee Health Consultant, International/Refugee Health Program. Minnesota Department of Health, Saint Paul, MN 2005-2006 -- Co-Director, Office of Community and Public Service, Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, MA 2005 (summer) -- Policy Intern, United Nations Development Program, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago 2003-2005 -- Bi-lingual Patient Services Coordinator, Hennepin County Medical Center’s Medicine Clinic, Minneapolis, MN 2001-2002--Legal Assistant, Ingber & Aronson, P.A., Minneapolis, MN Responsible for development and implementation of refugee education and outreach program (2006-present), including the Refugee Health Lending Library. Provide ongoing consultation around health & capacity building to diverse community-based organizations/ethnic mutual assistance associations in Minnesota; Liaison to MDH Office of Emergency Preparedness H1N1 special populations workgroup on key strategies for reaching non-English speaking and other ethnic communities, including key point of contact for the Emergency & Community Health Outreach program (ECHO). Assume leadership roles on local, statewide, national coalitions & planning committees focused on refugee and immigrant health, emergency & outreach activities. Presenter and planning member for locally and nationally recognized symposiums focused on refugee and immigrant health, policy and advocacy. Chair, Twin Cities World Refugee Day (2008 and 2009). Attained 501c3 nonprofit status for the Karen Organization of Minnesota - serving Karen refugees from Burma, a new ethnic community based organization (2008). Awarded $370,000 in federal and state grants/year for 3-5 years for the Karen Organization of Minnesota (2009), creating eight new staff positions.
