Dr. Hussein manages the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (MHHD) within the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Under her leadership MHHD promotes statewide actions to eliminate health disparities; manages a website, www.mdhealthdisparities.org; assists local health department programs to increase their focus on health disparities; funds local groups to reduce cancer and tobacco-related health disparities; funds two minority infant mortality reduction pilot projects; funds a minority cardiovascular disease reduction project, publishes health disparities data; collaborates with health professional institutions to increase minority matriculation; and recommends positions on legislation that impact minorities. MHHD is currently under a five-year grant from the HHS, Office of Minority Health to increase the State Heath Department’s focus on measurably reducing health disparities and to partner with Medical, Dental, Nursing, and Pharmacy schools to increase the matriculation of minorities through their institutions. In 2009, the Office was funded to develop a statewide H1N1 (Swine) Flu Community Outreach Project to ensure that culturally competent health communications are delivered to Maryland's diverse communities but also place H1N1 Outreach Workers in each of Maryland’s 24 distinct jurisdictions to assist with linkages between the local health departments and the priority and target populations throughout the State.
