Biographical Sketch:
Glen Nowak is Chief of Media Relations at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and acting Director of the Division of News and Electronic Media. As director of the Division of News and Electronic Media, he has responsibility for CDC’s news media, Internet and social media activities. As Chief of Media Relations, he serves as the senior media advisory to the CDC director and senior agency managers, and is responsible for the agency’s interactions with the news media (which includes media outreach, responding to news media inquiries, ensuring the CDC’s media relations website meets the needs of the agency and journalists, and serving as a CDC spokesperson). Prior to becoming Chief of Media Relations in June, 2004, Dr. Nowak was the director for communications for CDC’s National Immunization Program. As NIP’s director of communication, Dr. Nowak was responsible for all aspects of the communication program, from serving as senior communication advisor to NIP’s director to managing the various component functions. Prior to joining CDC in January 1999, Dr. Nowak was an associate professor of advertising and communication at the University of Georgia. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in advertising, communication and advertising research, communication and advertising management, social marketing, and health communications. In the past 20 years, he has authored or co-authored a number of peer-reviewed journal articles on communications practices, social marketing, and health communications, and conducted numerous workshops and trainings on health communication, social marketing, risk communication and media relations. Dr. Nowak received his PhD. in 1990 (mass communications) and M.A. degree in 1987 (journalism) from the University of Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1982 from UW-Milwaukee (economics and mass communications).
