Biographical Sketch:
Dr Rajib Dasgupta served a decade with the Epidemiology Division of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, India. During this period (1993-2003), he dealt with the epidemics of Cholera O139, Plague, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and SARS – problems that were technically challenging and politically sensitive. He has been involved with the polio eradication programme since the pilot round in 1994, including the evaluation of this phase (conducted by the WHO-UNICEF). He has been team members of two major national reviews of the Universal Immunization Program (2004-05) and the Polio Eradication Program (2007-08). He led a WHO-INCLEN study titled ‘Social Determinants for Effective Implementation of Polio Eradication Program’ in 2006-07 that developed a model of social resistance in the context of the polio campaign. He has published on polio in leading journals including the American Journal of Public Health, Bulletin of the World Health Organization, International Journal of Health Services, Indian Pediatrics and the Indian Journal of Medical Research dealing with programmatic and public health ethics aspects. He has been consultant on child health projects to various organizations including the UNICEF, World Bank and Save the Children. In his Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship [at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health] he is working towards developing a social determinants framework for understanding of child health programs, specifically the polio eradication program.
