Background: The Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) is a mature IIS. Because the initial reminder/recall feature was outdated and not user friendly, it was determined an enhancement to this feature was necessary. A workgroup of MIIC Regional Coordinators collaborated to develop the new Patient Follow-Up feature that allows users to follow-up with individuals that are recommended or overdue for immunizations.
Setting: During initial development, this feature was intended for use in primary care clinics but additional uses soon became apparent. The new Patient Follow-Up feature could be used by primary care clinics, local public health, child care centers, and schools.
Population: The first phase development of the Patient Follow-Up feature focuses on follow-up in the 0-6 year old population. Future enhancements will allow a broader spectrum of vaccines and populations, including adolescents and adults.
Project Description: Public health professionals will be provided with a brief presentation that will provide recommendations for how a mature registry’s functionality can be expanded to provide a follow-up tool for its users. The presenter will use a series of examples from this feature to help participants: 1) be challenged to consider how they can expand IIS use in their area; 2) develop functionality improvements of current IIS; and 3) to think about how a follow-up feature can be used to improve immunization rates, improve data quality in a registry, and assist during a disease outbreak.
Results/Lessons Learned: Public health professionals who receive ideas and examples on developing a Patient Follow-Up feature will become more aware of how they can improve IIS use in the communities they serve. This awareness can help prevent disease, protect health, save time and money.
