Increasing smoking cessation among women, especially in their childbearing years, is a national goal. Women experience the same health risks of smoking as men, as well as unique health consequences related to their biology and the potential negative health outcomes for unborn and young children. Unfortunately, research suggests that many women smokers face additional challenges to quitting compared to men. As part of an ongoing effort to reach and engage women in smoking cessation, the NCI’s Smokefree Women initiative (SFW) has explored the benefits of integrating new media with a web-assisted tobacco intervention. The foundation of SFW is the Smokefree Women website (http:women.smokefree.gov) designed to support the immediate and long-term needs of women as they become, and remain, nonsmokers. SFW features topics important to women, as well as information on overcoming common cessation barriers, such as weight gain, stress, depression & relationships. To capitalize on the potential usefulness of emerging technologies, interactive web-tools and social media platforms play a key role in SFW’s efforts to provide evidence-based cessation techniques and a support community. This symposium will present a series of papers discussing various aspects of SFW and will cover 1) Description of the core site and ongoing evaluation, 2) The impact of the use of social media and 3) A report on an effort to use social media tools to reach and engage pregnant smokers. Lessons learned from women.smokefree.gov will inform future iterations of the site and similar interventions.
