Efforts are currently underway to make data publicly available via Data.gov and the Community Health Data Initiative. The U.S. Health and Human Services Department is leading the Community Health Data Initiative which is a major new public-private effort that aims to help Americans understand health and health care performance in their communities -- and to help spark and facilitate action to improve performance. While data is useful in its raw form it is not always the most user-friendly. As an example of the next step in the open data process, see what the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has done with its treatment locator data to increase access to behavioral health treatment facilities.
