E1: E-1 Reducing subsequent poor pregnancy outcomes among women in Michigan

The African American infant mortality rate is more than three times the rate of White infant mortality in Michigan. To address the significant racial disparity associated with infant mortality in the state, the Michigan Department of Health led an effort to better understand the social context of pregnancy, to ascertain women’s pregnancy intentions and to identify appropriate interventions for local action. This session will focus on the development of an interconception care program among African American women with previous poor birth outcomes in Michigan. Attendees will hear how the voices of women were used to inform the development and implementation of an interconception program to reduce subsequent premature births, low birth weight births, fetal death, and neonatal deaths. State and local officials will discuss the importance of leadership and key partnerships to guide successful local preconception initiatives.
