D6: D-6 Chronic disease prevention and interventions for African American women

Preconception care involves ongoing assessments and interventions related to nutritional status (obesity); preexisting medical risks (diabetes, HTN, HIV); substance abuse (medications, drugs, alcohol); and prior pregnancy complications (gestational diabetes, PIH). Cultural competence and sensitivity are paramount for provision of relevant health promotion messages, patient/community member education, and interventional services. This session approaches potentially modifiable behavioral and social risks to women's health/pregnancy outcomes through innovative, consumer friendly, interconception period interventional strategies. Prevention of obesity-related pregnancy complications through racially/ethnically-specific targeted weight management; COPC engaging AA women in family planning; and psychosocial directed interventions with incarcerated HIV+ women will be discussed.
