M1: M-1 Strategies for Implementation: Action in the Clinical Workgroup of the CDC Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative

The clinical workgroup of the CDC Select Panel on Preconception Care is composed of 28 clinical experts from around the country who have worked since June 2006 to advance the preconception care clinical agenda. The 'mini-plenary" will review the group's work in the following areas: (1) Preparation of a CONCISE REVIEW of the rationale and components of preconception care that summarizes the evidence for each component, provides a recommendation regarding the incorporation of each component into routine clinical activities, and rates the strength of the recommendation and the quality of the evidence; (2) Creation of a national CURRICULUM and TEACHING TOOLS for training clinicians that will feature self study modules; and slide sets to be used in facilitated educational sessions that will be available on the web, to include credits for physicians, advance practice nurses and others and will be comprised of four modules: the rationale of preconception health promotion; integration of preconception health promotion into routine well woman visits; care of women with identified risk factors; and care of women with previous poor pregnancy outcomes; (3) Production of a SCREENING TOOL to be used in clinical practice that will determine the risk factors that should be screened for based on the currently available scientific evidence; review the existing tools for format and content; determine the best available validated instruments where they exist; determine when, how and on whom they were validated; choose which to include in the tool; then format and pilot the instruments in several clinical settings; and (4) Begin a process for SETTING THE RESEARCH AGENDA that involves an initiative to organize and carry out a NIH-sponsored conference that will focus on determining the best strategies for moving the scientific and scholarly agenda forward. Also presented will be plans to develop a project to test the efficacy and effectiveness of the above tools, and developing intervention menus, clinical benchmarks and CQI strategies for practice. Time will be provided for participant interaction and discussion.
