M2: M-2 Strategies for Implementation: Action in the Public Health Workgroup of the CDC Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative

The Public Health Workgroup seeks to foster the integration of public health practice and policies into public health programs. This integration is being done by improving data collection and quality through enhancing monitoring and surveillance systems; creating models of practice; and developing the skills of the public health workforce.

Workgroup priorities include:

  • Support a Preconception Health Practice Collaborative of selected state and local teams who, using a common framework, will work together and within their jurisdictions
  • Improve public health surveillance and monitoring of preconception health and health care services (PRRAMS, Healthy People 2020, etc.)
  • Seek federal and state agency support to encourage more integrated preconception health practices
  • Support federal public health programs to develop, evaluate, and disseminate integrated approaches to promote preconception health
  • Analyze and evaluate the preconception care activities used under the federal Healthy Start
Workgroup members are actively addressing these priorities. Progress is being monitored in three primary areas: collecting and using data; integrating preconception health into public health programs; and training the public health workforce. Some of the specific activities underway include the following. Data systems relevant to preconception health are being inventoried and a plan to gather this information is under development. Preconception care activities within the federal Healthy Start program are being analyzed. A public health practice collaborative on integrating preconception care is being piloted by three communities (Los Angeles, Nashville, and Hartford). Several workforce training activities are underway, such as use of the MCH Supplement in public health education curriculum.

This session will offer participants:

  • An overview of the workgroup’s philosophy, priorities, and progress
  • A robust dialog about current and future workgroup activities
  • Opportunities for engagement in public health preconception health and health care work
