Biographical Sketch:
Tom Savel, MD is the Director of the Research & Development Unit in the Public Health Informatics & Technology Program Office. Dr. Savel came to CDC in 2003 as a Public Health Informatics Fellow. He remained at the agency after the completion of his fellowship as a medical officer, where he has carried out a wide variety of activities in the field of public health informatics, ranging from policy development to security monitoring. His clinical training has included both General Surgery and Family Practice, and he has had direct experience developing, using, and implementing health information systems. He has been a technology columnist for American Medical News, as well as an on-air technology consultant for the Fox News affiliate in Houston, Texas. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, and an MD degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
