Biographical Sketch:
Mr. Klein has spent 33 years in software development, devoting the last 20 years to the healthcare industry. Principal Technical Fellow at McKessonHBOC developing healthcare data models and coordinating distributed development efforts in the overseas operations. Founded the McKessonHBOC HL7 Interface group to develop common HL7 standard implementation guides across all the company acquisitions both in the US and abroad. Chief Scientist with ProVation Medical, developing physician documentation systems for non-invasive surgical procedures, implementing both HL7 and DICOM interfaces. Chaired the HL7 Modeling and Methodology WorkGroup for six years and the Vocabulary WorkGroup for 7 years, has been a key member of the HL7 Version 3 development team, and is a recipient of the W. Ed Hammond Volunteer of the Year Award, and has served on the HL7 Board of Directors. Member of the Clinical LOINC committee. President and owner of Klein Consulting, Inc. (KCI), a small company supplying software design, development, and Medical Informatics services to the HIT industry in the United States and abroa focusing on HL7 interface design and development, concept representation and vocabulary mapping for system interoperability, and Clinical Database architecture, design and implementation. KCI is currently involved in several active projects nationally in the public health arena involving disease surveillance and analysis of collected public health information, as well as the establishment of standard terminology across all areas. KCI has also provided services for the implementation of some of the systems protecting the US from bioterror attacks, and for a number of clinical research projects at Columbia University and Cornell University. KCI is actively involved with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US National Library of Medicine, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, and several States in a variety of projects. Ted holds a BES in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University and an MS in Computer Science from New York Polytechnic University, and has attended advanced training classes in database technology and DICOM, among other areas. He has taught tutorials at HL7 and classes at Columbia University School of Nursing, and has had several articles published in medical informatics journals.
