Biographical Sketch:
Dr Manders is a research assistant professor in the department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University (VU), and on the faculty of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science and has worked as a research scientist in pre and postdoctoral capacity in industrial and academic research institutions.
He is co-inventor on two US patents related to diagnostic reasoning and is a co-author of a chapter on health management in life support systems for human space flight in the book "Systems Health Management" to appear in 2011 (Wiley Blackwell publishers).
In 2007 he directed his attention towards medical informatics in resource limited settings. He joined the faculty at VU in 2008 and currently directs the health information systems component of Vanderbilt University's PEPFAR program in Mozambique, results of which were recently presented at MEDINFO 2010.
In other current work he has developed and deployed tools to handle large household surveys, and research data capture instruments on mobile devices.
His main areas of interest are the use of information systems to improve data driven decision making and planning, using design automation to model clinical information systems for public health use, linking facility and community based health information, and scalable public health informatics research platforms.
