Biographical Sketch:
Yevgeniy Elbert received his Bachelors degree in Mathematics from Kiev University, Ukraine. He continued his education at University of Maryland Baltimore County, receiving a Masters degree in Mathematical Statistics in 1999. He worked as a statistician in the field of epidemiology and public health starting at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (2001) before joining JHUAPL in 2006. The majority of his work has been devoted to the development of the Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community Based Epidemics (ESSENCE) as part of the APL research team. Yevgeniy's expertise includes development of alerting algorithms for syndromic surveillance, biostatistics, statistical programming, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data processing. He authored and co-authored papers in the field (most recent - Elbert, Y, Burkom H. "Development and Evaluation of a data-adaptive alerting algorithm for univariate temporal biosurvellance data" - Statistics in Medicine 2009; 28:3226-3248) and presented his work at different public health symposiums.
