Biographical Sketch:
Since 2007, Neil Jacobs, BSc, MMed, MBA, has been a HMIS Specialist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-South Africa. He has led a variety of National Department of Health Informatics Initiatives. Recently, he assumed the role of Health Systems Strengthening Advisor role for PEPFAR in South Africa.
Mr. Jacobs recently deployed a CDC-sponsored health information system called Smart Care in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Smart Care is a patient-level electronic medical record for individuals on anti-retroviral therapy. This activity served as the basis for a presentation at MedInfo 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa describing the successful implementation of Smart Care in one district and three sub-districts. Mr. Jacobs is co-author of a poster accepted for AMIA PHI2011 in Orlando, FL entitled, “Building Foundational Competency in Health Information Systems in South Africa: A Pilot Training Course in the Eastern Cape Province.
