The Centers of Excellence in Pubic Health Informatics PO-1 grant program (COE PHI) began in 2005 and was renewed in 2009. The panel comprises representatives from each of the four current COEs. They will present the aims and results of their work, with an emphasis on the collaborations, translations to practice, and impact on priority areas for public health research and development.
The Centers of Excellence in Public Health Informatics PO-1 grant program (COE PHI) began in 2005.  This panel comprises representatives of the four current COEs who will present their aims and results, with an emphasis on collaboration, translation, and impact on priority issues in public health.

The Rocky Mountain Center of Excellence in Public Health Informatics, housed at the University of Utah, includes multiple public health partners.  Project one is about implementation of a visual analytic and decision support system to enhance community health assessment and public health surveillance.  Project two focuses on deployment of new methods to represent knowledge and exchange information relevant to public health practice.

The Harvard COE has two principal projects. Connecting Personally Controlled Health Records and Social Networks (PCHR/SN) for Health links personally controlled health records to a social networking platform for diabetes surveillance, support, information sharing, and cohort research. Electronic Medical Record Support of Public Health: Diabetes (ESP:DM) adds chronic disease surveillance capabilities to an EMR based system that identifies and reports notifiable disease & health management surveillance to state health departments.

The Indiana Center of Excellence in Public Health Informatics strategy is to advance the study of public health informatics by creating solutions for data integration, information, and workflows in the community.  Objectives of the Center include - creating a nexus for multidisciplinary public health informatics research, establishing a research "laboratory" for community-based informatics solutions, and developing methodologies to improve population-based surveillance and data integration.

CASIPH, the University of Pittsburgh COE, is developing Bayesian case- and outbreak-detection/characterization systems for reportable diseases— including suspected and probable cases—that infer outbreak characteristics required to initialize epidemic models.  CASIPH collaborates with health departments (Pennsylvania; Allegheny and Tarrant Counties), UPMC Health System, MIDAS research network, and NLM-funded projects in decision-making in influenza vaccine-strain selection and disease control.
