The 2007 survey of the biosurveillance systems in Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Boston and New York City helped identify a potential model for biosurveillance operations through health information exchanges and the Nationwide Health Information Network. The proposed model is based on interoperability principles so that BioSense could leverage existing state and local biosurveillance systems to create a nationwide biosurveillance system. The model could help implement a strategy that extends current BioSense capabilities to better support state and local public health agencies needs in health information exchanges. The presentation describes the steps that could help validate the proposed model.
