1970 – Present – The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, JHU/APL
1970-1993 – Scientific Investigator/Section Supervisor for organization focusing on improvements to surveillance methods from independent contributor to Director of a large experimental program to capture data and develop new analysis methods
1990-1997 - Business Manager, Healthcare Information Systems/APL Representative to Johns Hopkins Medicine Center for Information Services
1997-1998 - William S. Parsons Sabbatical Fellow with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
1998-Present – Program Manager, Bio Information Systems, Special Applications Program Office
2006–Present – Director of the JHU/APL Center of Excellence in Public Health Informatics
As Director of the JHU/APL Center of Excellence, responsible for overseering the development and improvement of automated tools to enhance disease surveillance.
Led the development of the Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE), which is currently being used widely by the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Health Affairs, and several state and local health departments.
Co-author of book and numerous journal articles regarding public health informatics and disease surveillance.
Numerous presentations at scientific meetings.
