This presentation will examine the benefits of and best practices for sharing health information electronically between Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) and public health. The NY, Indiana and Washington/Idaho HIE Initiatives will provide a summary of their ongoing accomplishments from the CDC’s Situational Awareness through Health Information Exchange program as well as current year activities and plans. Key activities discussed include:
* Developing collaboration and data sharing agreements between HIEs and state, local and Federal public health agencies
* Putting into operation the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) standards and Gateway services
* Developing innovative practices for sharing information between public health and the clinical care environment
* Extending existing technical standards to support summarized data exchange
* Responding to the H1N1 outbreak using HIE data and processes, to support both case identification, and situational awareness based on summarized data
* Developing evaluation plans for assessing the utility and effectiveness of HIE and public health interactions
