Monitoring Cervical Cancer Precursors, HPV Type Distribution, and Vaccination Status through the Emerging Infections Program Network

Susan Hariri, Division of STD Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, MS E-02, Atlanta, GA, USA

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 2 and 3 are immediate precursors to cervical cancer but take less time to develop. Monitoring these precancerous lesions may allow a more timely evaluation of the HPV vaccine impact than cervical cancer. A project to conduct population-based CIN 2/3, HPV type distribution and HPV vaccine monitoring within 4 geographically diverse areas with strong existing surveillance infrastructures will be described.
