A5: The Power of Many Voices: Increasing HIV, STD and Viral Hepatitis Integration

Organizer:Chris Taylor

Abstract: Background: The populations at risk for, or infected with HIV, STDs and one or more types of viral hepatitis overlap significantly: injection drug users (IDU), men who have sex with men (MSM) and persons with multiple sex partners. Due to similar modes of transmission, health departments and community based organizations have been integrating HIV/STD/viral hepatitis/adult immunization services to meet the needs of their clients. As budgets continue to tighten and funders expect more collaboration and coordination among programs, health departments and community based organizations are continuing to use creative approaches to increase integrated services. Participants are uniquely equipped and positioned to provide high quality integrated services in their communities.

Purpose: To explore strategies for increasing integration of HIV, STD/viral hepatitis/adult vaccination services where appropriate and examine barriers and methods to address the barriers to meaningful and successful integration activities.

Methods (instructional approach): The presenters will provide an overview of national efforts to increase and support state and local integration activities and examples of how jurisdictions have successfully integrated services. Participants will have the opportunity to identify barriers to increasing integration and explore strategies in small groups to address these barriers. Participants will be given tools to help prepare for action as they return to their organizations and jurisdictions equipped to begin to integrate activities or to further increase their integration efforts.
