Screening Protocols and Education
Screening protocols vary by site. Many pilot programs gain acceptance over time, resulting in expansion to all schools in a given jurisdiction, (NO, NYC, IHS and Philadelphia). In Baltimore, screening is limited to students presenting to SBHCs. STD education occurs in groups of up to 60 students at a time as in Philadelphia, NYC and NO, or may be provided at the individual level, as in SBHCs in Baltimore. Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) are the test type used in every setting, mostly on urine samples, but self-collected-vaginal swabs are also used in Baltimore.
