Biographical Sketch:
2008-present: ProfessorInfectious Diseases Division, Medicine, Johns Hopkins University with joint appointments in Emergency Medicine, Epidemiology and Population, Family and Reproductive Health, School of Public Health. 2001-2008 :Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases Division, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. 1995-2001: Assistant Professor, Infectious Disease Division, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gaydos is the Director of the International STD, Respiratory Diseases, and Biothreat Research Laboratory. Dr. Gaydos has extensive laboratory expertise with over 40 years experience in microbiology. She has authored 14 book chapters, over 200 research articles, and over 400 research abstracts and oral presentations. Dr. Gaydos has conducted clinical trials for new diagnostics for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae. She has worked for 22 years in STD research developing DNA amplification tests for C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci, T. vaginalis, N. gonorrhoeae, and M. genitalium. An Internet project for home chlamydia screening using self-administered vaginal swabs has been an effective method for reaching women who may not attend clinics. Her laboratory is the Core Diagnostic Laboratory and the Reference Laboratory for many collaborative studies of STDs, respiratory diseases, and trachoma. She is Co-investigator for the Diagnostic Core for the Mid-Atlantic Center of Excellence for Biothreat and Emerging Infectious Diseases. She is the recent recipient of an NIH Center grant to develop point-of-care tests for STDs. The laboratory is CLIA-licensed for diagnostic assays. Dr. Gaydos is the Director of the North American Branch for the International Union Against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI); serves on the Executive Boards of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (ASTDA) and International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research (ISSTDR); and serves on the Editorial Board for the STD Journal.
