Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Maria Paz Carlos has more than fourteen years of experience as a laboratory manager and virologist/immunologist with a focus on infectious diseases including HIV, influenza viruses, HCV, and other infectious diseases that have profoundly impacted public health. She has trained, supervised and mentored approximately fifty individuals (academicians, scientists, and health/industry professionals), who have since progressed in various career paths –industry, government, graduate and medical studies. Dr. Carlos served as an NIH NCRR K-12 Science Education Program Mentor for high school students. She has also developed course materials on HIV, HCV, and HPV prevention, as well as basic immunology and virology for Latin American (Venezuela, Mexico, Ecuador) health care providers and clinical researchers. Dr. Carlos participated in the NYC Health Research Training Program, NYU ID Fellows Rotation, and Medical Technologist Internship Program with Hunter College to promote careers in laboratory science and public health. Dr. Carlos has closely worked with federal agencies and state counterparts, as well as professional organizations including the Association of Public Health Laboratories, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Epidemiology and Disease Control, STD Program, Region III Infertility and Prevention Program, Office of AIDS Administration, US Department of Agriculture, and CLSI. Dr. Carlos is currently the Chief of the Division of Virology and Immunology for the State of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Laboratories Administration. Dr. Carlos directs both clinical and environmental virology and immunology laboratories, which provide laboratory services in detection of viral and bacterial etiologic agents afflicting humans. Prior to joining the MD DOHMH, Dr. Carlos worked as the Director of Virology at the New York City DOHMH Public Health Laboratory, where she successfully managed the clinical virology program with a team of 22 staff members. Prior to this, Dr. Carlos served as a Faculty member in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of California at Davis, as well as an Associate Professor in the AIDS Reference Laboratory and Department of Microbiology, Ponce School of Medicine, Puerto Rico.
