Biographical Sketch:
2006-present -- Acting Instructor, Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Washington. Research focused on detailed clinical studies designed to examine the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) reactivation and clearance, the effect of HSV-2 antiviral suppressive therapy on behaviors related to transmission, and the development of effective public health approaches to genital herpes prevention. Clinic Co-Director, UW/FHCRC HIV Vaccine Trials Unit. 2003-2006 -- Senior Fellow, University of Washington, Seattle WA (Infectious Diseases) 2001-2003 -- Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, assigned to Division of STD and Hepatitis Prevention, San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency. Activities included investigating increases in fluoroquinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in California, studying the use of a sample survey methodology to estimate clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of reported gonorrhea cases in San Diego, evaluating the impact of hepatitis C screening in STD clinic and HIV testing sites, investigating a dengue fever outbreak in Hawaii, and other activities. 1998-2001 -- Intern and Resident, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, CA (Internal Medicine) 1996-1997 -- Project Manager, Zambia-Emory HIV Research Project, Lusaka, Zambia. Supervised the on-site medical, laboratory, social services/recruitment, and quality control departments of this NIAID-funded AIDS prevention research project in Africa. Studied clients' attitudes towards rapid HIV testing and conducted a randomized trial of interventions to encourage family planning. 12 published peer-reviewed manuscripts and >20 presentations at national and international scientific conferences.
