Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Zenilman is an internationally recognized expert in STD care, clinical research and policy. As a EIS officer, he conceived, developed, and implemented the National Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Program (GISP) In 1989 he coordinated and wrote the 1989 STD Treatment Guidelines, and has been part of every Guidelines committee since. Since 1989, he has been at Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore STD Program where he has developed an active clinical and translational research program focusing on STD epidemiology. His interests have included clinical trials, STD surveillance, and developing biomarkers to validate responses in behavioral research. He has also served as site PI on large CDC multicenter studies, including Project RESPECT, HPV surveillance and SSun. He has testified before Congress and the Maryland legislature on STD related issues. In 2010, he served as the technical advisor to the US Presidential Commission on Bioethical Issues investigation of the US Public Health Service syphilis studies in Guatemala during the 1940s. He is a past President of the American STD Association, and in 2013, was awarded the Association’s Lifetime Career Achievement Award
