Biographical Sketch:
Professor David Lewis has worked in the field of STIs since 1989, both as a physician and a microbiologist. His current work involves both HIV/STI research and surveillance in Southern Africa. His academic interests include antimicrobial resistant gonorrhoea, syphilis and genital ulcer diseases, as well as human papillomavirus infection. In recent years, Professor Lewis has played a leading role in STI guideline revisions in South Africa, Namibia and for the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Professor Lewis has assisted the World Health Organization (WHO) with writing of guidance for the introduction of rapid syphilis tests and the WHO manual for the laboratory diagnosis of STIs. Professor Lewis is the serving President for the International Union against STIs (IUSTI) and, until July 2013, he served as Regional Director for the IUSTI-Africa region. He has recently completed his term as Executive Board Member of the International Society for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases’ Research (ISSTDR). Professor Lewis is Deputy Editor for Sexually Transmitted Infections and a Joint Editor for 'Sexual Health'. Professor Lewis has 90 peer-reviewed publications, mostly in the field of STIs.
