Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Charlotte Gaydos is a Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Medicine, Johns Hopkins University with joint appointments in Emergency Medicine, Epidemiology, and Population, Family and Reproductive Health, School of Public Health. She is the Director of the International STD, Respiratory Diseases, and Biothreat Research Laboratory. She received her B.S. in medical technology and her M.S. in medical microbiology from West Virginia University. Her MPH. and DPH were received from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. She has 45 years laboratory expertise in microbiology, has authored 26 book chapters, 365 research articles, and >500 abstracts/oral presentations. Dr. Gaydos has conducted clinical trials for new diagnostics for C. trachomatis, N. gonorrhoeae and T. vaginalis. Her research has included developing DNA amplification tests for C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci, T. vaginalis, N. gonorrhoeae, M. genitalium and the agents of genital ulcer disease. An Internet project for home chlamydia screening using self-obtained urogenital samples and return mail has been an effective program for reaching women and men who may not attend clinics to be tested for STDs. Her laboratory is the International Core Diagnostic Laboratory and Reference Laboratory for many collaborative epidemiologic and behavioral studies of STDs, respiratory diseases, and trachoma. She is Co-investigator for the Diagnostic Core for the Mid-Atlantic Center of Excellence for Biothreat and Emerging Infectious Diseases. She is the recipient of an NIBIB, NIH Center grant to develop and test point-of-care tests for STDs, The laboratory is CAP/CLIA-licensed for diagnostic assays. Dr. Gaydos serves on the Executive Boards of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (ASTDA) and International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research (ISSTDR); and serves on the Editorial Board for the STD Journal. She is Chairman of the Research Translational Committee of National Chlamydia Coalition.
