Integrating Viral Hepatitis into Client Centered Counseling

Dana Cropper-Williams and Heather Lusk.

Learning Objective:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:
1. Identify barriers to integration and discuss the importance of integration.
2. Create viral hepatitis core health messages for specific populations.
3. Demonstrate skill in discussing viral hepatitis and supporting risk reduction.
4. Identify training activities that build skills for integrating viral hepatitis into counseling sessions.

Background:

Viral hepatitis has been identified as a threat to many clients seeking public health services. Integration has become an important process under the constraints of limited financial and staffing resources.

Setting:

STD & HIV clinics, HIV programs, Substance treatment facilities, public health settings

Population e.g. API Youth, MSM, IDU:

HIV prevention counselors, Disease Intervention Specialists, HIV case managers or any person counseling adults living with or at risk for viral hepatitis.

Project Description:

This workshop will showcase a snapshot of the “Integrating Viral Hepatitis into Client Centered Counseling” training course. The workshop provides an overview of viral hepatitis with a focus on hepatitis C and will include activities and exercises incorporated in the training course. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who are interested in implementing this course in their project area.
The training curriculum was developed by the National Coalition of STD Directors, in collaboration with the California STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and the Hawaii Department of Health.

Results/Lessons Learned:

State health departments have made strides in their integration efforts by implementing policies and procedures that require minimal financial and staffing resources. In addition, most realize that training is essential to program integration. Employees that work directly with clients can contribute significantly by providing pertinent information to clients at risk for viral hepatitis. This workshop and the training it showcases attempts to strengthen the skills necessary to facilitate integration.
