North Dakota Prisons Division Hepatitis Program

Learning Objective:

-By the end of this prsentation participates will be able to understand the role of methamphetamine plays in hepatits C rates of the North Dakota Prisons Division,
-By the end of the presentation participates will be able to identify the componets of North Dakota Prisons hepatitis C treatment protocol.
-By the end of the presentation participants will be able to identify componets of prison prevention and education program


Background:

North Dakota Prisons Divisions public health initiative regarding hepatis is multifaceted. 60% of offenders entering the system use methamphetamine. 80% of these offenders use and share needles.


Setting:

1300 adult male and female offenders incarcerated in four facilities.


Population e.g. API Youth, MSM, IDU:

Adult male and female.


Project Description:

The goal of the Prisons Division hepatitis program is to educate offenders regarding hepatitis, provide addiction treatment, screen offenders for hepatitis C, immunize offenders for hepatitis A and B, and treat offenders for Hepatitis C who meet treatment protocol.


Results/Lessons Learned:

A multifaceted approach to prevention,screening and treated of hepatits can be acheived in a prison setting.
