Enhancing Viral Hepatitis Presentations and Trainings

Heather Lusk, STD/AIDS Prevention Branch, Hawai`i Department of Health, 3627 Kilauea Avenue, Suite 306, Honolulu, HI, USA

Learning Objective:

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:
1. List presentation and facilitation skills that enhance the effectiveness of viral hepatitis talks, workshops and trainings.
2. Identify adult learning principles and interactive techniques to involve participants in the learning process.
3. Describe techniques to work with group dynamics and other challenges in viral hepatitis presentations.

Background:

Conducting viral hepatitis presentations, workshops and trainings are a core activity in promoting hepatitis awareness, building provider skills in integrating viral hepatitis into existing services and in disseminating best practices and lessons learned in viral hepatitis research and programs. While presenters are often experts in their field, they may lack formal training in presentation skills and facilitating group process that may affect learners' ability to gain knowledge and build skills.

Setting:

Public health departments, community-based organizations, universities, and other venues that offer educational opportunities.

Population e.g. API Youth, MSM, IDU:

Hepatitis C Coordinators, STD/ HIV trainers, and other providers that offer health education, presentations and trainings on viral hepatitis.

Project Description:

This interactive presentation will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the theoretical basis of facilitation and presentation skills, assess their own strengths and weaknesses in conducting presentations, explore how groups affect the learning process, and discuss tools to help engage people in learning about viral hepatitis.

Results/Lessons Learned:

Viral hepatitis presentations will be enhanced by the application of skills presenters use to convey information and the training modalities used to reach diverse learning audiences. Utilizing effective presentation and facilitation techniques allows learners to integrate new information without being impacted by the delivery of the information. Teaching about viral hepatitis has unique qualities that distinguishes it from presenting about other health topics such as HIV and STDs, and there are training techniques that presenters can use to enhance the effectiveness of viral hepatitis presentations.
