Objective:To assess the membership of the New York State Diabetes Task Force (NYSDTF) and describe the extent to which members reflect diversity in gender and ethnicity, and mirror the epidemiological profile of the burden of diabetes in NYS.

Methods:The NYSDTF serves as the advisory body for the New York State (NYS) Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) and is collaborating with DPCP staff to update the NYS Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Diabetes. As a part of this process, the DPCP developed a web-based survey to assess task force membership as a way to ensure representation from a variety of diabetes stakeholders in NYS. The tool was designed and pre-tested by DPCP staff and administered to the task force membership in May 2009.

Results:A total of 57 out of 64 members responded to the survey, for a response rate of approximately 90%. Information on task force members’ credentialing, area of expertise, gender, race/ethnicity, organizational role, target population, and geographic area served was collected and analyzed. A report containing an overview of the survey results and gaps in task force membership was distributed to members in the fall of 2009.

Conclusion:Results from the survey will be used to help guide the diversification of the NYSDTF and ensure that membership includes representation from all relevant diabetes stakeholders in NYS. The DPCP and task force members will discuss the findings and formulate action steps at an upcoming meeting; results will be forthcoming.
