Objective: To develop a single Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP) for use of all providers and school districts in the state of Virginia to influence diabetes care in the school setting.
Methods: Collaboration from school nurse coordinators from six school districts in Southeastern Virginia discussed the development of consistant guidelines and protocols for caring for students with diabetes. A coalition was formed by members of pediatric endocrinology offices from across the state. A draft was created and the decision was made to implement the plan for the 2008-2009 school year. The plan was implemented in Southeastern and Central Virginia. A larger statewide workgroup was formed for evaluation and revison of the DMMP. This group included pediatric endocrinology providers, certified diabetes educators, school nurses, and members of the Virginia Diabetes Council. Following 7 months of implementation an online survey was created for providers and schools to evaluate the content and layout.
Results: Feedback from the surveys were externally reviewed and evaluated. A subcommittee was then formed to address feedback from the surveys and to complete revisions of the plan. Training sessions were coordinated to introduce the DMMP to school personnel.
Conclusion: A statewide DMMP has enhanced the ability to care for students with diabetes. The plan has also increased communication between health care providers, parents, and schools. A statewide DMMP that supports the principle of the ADA Clinical Practice Recommendations as well as the ADA Safe at School Plan is critical in effectively caring for students with diabetes.
