Objective:  To present the results of a preliminary assessment of diabetes registries supported by Diabetes Prevention and Control Programs (DPCP).

Methods:  The authors reviewed DPCP program documents and interviewed program staff to assess DPCP-supported diabetes registries.  This review included the assessment of the size of the registry, characteristics of the registry population, data collected in the registry, and the frequency and type of registry reporting.

Results:  Of the 53 federally-funded DPCPs, preliminary results identify 21 programs supporting registries capturing diabetes quality-of-care data.  The registry population ranges from less than 2,000 to more than 15,000 people with diabetes; the settings for care include federally qualified health centers, HMOs and private health clinics; and the age of the diabetes registries range from 2 years or less to more than 10 years.

Conclusion:  Preliminary results show a number of differences in the characteristics of DPCP-supported diabetes registries.  Additional examination is needed to further assess the capacity of these registries to collect quality of care data.
