BACKGROUND:
Michigan has a State mandated Immunization Registry (MCIR) and is divided into 6 Regions. Region 1 (Southeastern Michigan) covers 7 counties and the City of Detroit. Faced with budget constraints and limited staffing the challenge to utilize resources in the most effective manner became imperative. A non-traditional approach to determine where outreach activities would provide the best results was piloted in one county.

OBJECTIVE:
1. To develop a strategy that would increase the number of fully immunized children in MCIR that reside in the selected county.
2. Assess the type of staffing and technical resources needed to accomplish the goal.
3. Assist the county in achieving the accreditation standard of 50% fully immunized children in the MCIR.

METHOD:
A profile report was run for each provider in the selected county to assess the number of children in the practice that were not fully immunized. Utilizing Pareto's Principle, focus was placed on the providers who had the most children overdue for vaccines in the MCIR. Those providers were contacted to determine what barriers existed and offered assistance in improving their percentages. High emphasis was placed on de-duplication of records, data quality and entering historical information.

RESULT:
The countywide immunization level in MCIR increased from 21% to 38% for 4:3:3:1:3:1 in 16 months.

CONCLUSION:
Strategic planning is necessary as healthcare providers face more budget constraints to accomplish "more with less".

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will be able to identify and apply a number of cost effective strategies to increase the number of fully immunized children in their registries.
2. How to coordinate a countywide collaborative effort to raise rates.
3. Identify the type of staffing and technical resources required to accomplish your goal.
