iREX vs. T. Rex

BACKGROUND:
Standards, such as Health Level 7 (HL7) for electronic data interchange between health, hospital, and other related organizations have emerged for a variety of reasons, including, for example, the need for speed, reduced cost, common vocabularies, easy access, insurance/billing, public health surveillance, data analysis, and integrated electronic health records.
Exchange of immunization registry information requires secure transport, compatible security, and adherence to standards.

OBJECTIVE:
Demonstrate tool set with basic HL7 connectivity at minimum cost.

METHOD:

RESULT:
The Immunization Registry Exchange (iREX) project has developed a set of free tools which provide the above functions.

CONCLUSION:
Immunization Registries which are in the formative stages or whose existing or proposed configurations match with these free tools should evaluate them for possible use.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Explain standards-based Immunization Information Exchange using the iREX tool.
