Integrating WIC and a Statewide Immunization Registry: A Case Study in Indiana

BACKGROUND:
WIC and SIIS system (Statewide Information Immunization Systems)have traditionally been standalone applications. WIC charted to ensure low income children recieve adequate nutrional support. This includes ensuring up to date shots provided to WIC children. Adequate and appropriate access to SIIS information to assist WIC personel in these duties has been difficult for many state WIC programs.

OBJECTIVE:
Define three main barriers to integrating WIC and SIIS systems. Discuss methods or ways to address the barriers. Describe one state's application of interfacing WIC and SIIS (Indiana).

METHOD:
Powerpoint presentation, discussion, slide demo of both systems.

RESULT:
An understanding of the issues relating to integrating WIC and SIIS systems. Technical and strategic ways of resolving the barriers in integrating the two systems.

CONCLUSION:
Immunization registry data is valuable data that enahance many diffent public health program. WIC is a classic example of a positive manner in using SIIS data though it's been very difficult for states to agree with methods and solutions to this partnership. Sharing information about a succesfull WIC/SIIS integration project can assist others in achieving this goal.
