Utilizing Immunization Registries in Conducting Outreach

Christina Babin, Idaho Immunization Program-IRIS, Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, PO Box 83720, 450 West State Street, Boise, ID, USA and Danielle Reader-Jolley, SIIS, Scientific Technologies Corporation, 4400 E. Broadway Blvd, Suite 705, Tucson, AZ, USA.

BACKGROUND:
Immunization registries contain important data that can be valuable in planning and implementing outreach clinics/events. Integrating operational registry functions into outreach activities provides a reliable immunization history, eliminates fragmented records, alleviates the need for duplicate data entry and provides a method for evaluating the outcomes of the event.

OBJECTIVE:
1) Present the benefits of using registries in conjunction with planned outreach; 2) Share strategies for incorporating registries and outreach activities; and 3) Discuss methods of using registries to target specific populations and increase attendance.

METHOD:
Two strategies have been used in Idaho to incorporate and maximize the use of the Immunization Reminder Information System (IRIS) for outreach: 1) mobilizing the registry through internet connection, remote PC application and/or snapshot of registry data on CD, and 2) conducting targeted marketing for outreach clinics/events by using reminder/recall features and selection of critical populations/pockets of need.

RESULT:
Mobilization of the registry has increased efficiency by providing access to reliable, complete immunization histories, eliminating fragmented records and duplicate data entry, and enabling evaluation of the impact of the outreach strategy on coverage levels. Directed marketing has contributed to increased attendance among critical and target populations and decreased advertising costs.

CONCLUSION:
Integration of immunization registries with service delivery and outreach is a critical step in evolving these systems from a data warehouse to a tool for improving immunization rates. Maximizing registry tools and utilizing registry data for outreach activities are key factors to the success and sustainability of statewide registry initiatives.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will learn the advantages of having an operational registry present during outreach clinics and events.
2. Participants will be able to list at least 2 methods for transporting functional registries to outreach activities.
3. Participants will identify ways that immunization registries can assist in planning and increasing attendance at outreach events.
